Flashback to 2020: The mortality rate in Maharashtra was soaring, buildings, even entire areas were being sealed off in a bid to contain Covid-19, the medical fraternity was scrambling to cope with a virus that seemed to have taken on apocalyptic dimensions.

One publication aptly called it, “The age of fear”, because people were terrified: not just of the disease, its symptoms and side-effects, but also of the prospect of dying alone, away from loved ones.

Like most people, senior citizen Hrishikesh Sule (name changed), who was admitted to a pop-up jumbo hospital in Pune at the time, was inconsolable.

He was certain he wouldn’t make it, and mortified by the possibility that his body may go missing given that the medical infrastructure was overwhelmed by the number of fatalities due to Covid.
